How much liquid chlorine do I add to my pool?

The biggest part of figuring out how much liquid chlorine to add to your swimming pool is knowing how many gallons of water it contains. Knowing the starting point of the chlorine already in your pool is also helpful.

What to use - Soda Ash vs Baking Soda

Knowing the difference can affect the balance of your pool significantly

Having a swimming pool and maintaining the chemical balance is sometimes like being a mad scientist. A little bit of this, many times has a huge effect on a little bit of that. This article by Rudy Stankowitz in the Pool and Spa News does a great job explaining the difference between soda ash and baking soda. It also demonstrates how you can get more bang for your buck by using the right chemical under the right circumstances.

You know you’re the only one who buys that," the counter person at my local distributor would say as he headed to the warehouse to pull a 50-pound bag of soda ash.

The industry standard has always been to use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to raise total alkalinity and sodium carbonate (soda ash) to raise pH — the exception being if both total alkalinity and pH are low. Understanding that it is impossible to raise (or lower) one without effecting the other chemically, there is still a "right tool for the job" analogy that comes into play.

Using sodium bicarbonate will have a more measurable effect on total alkalinity, while only raising the pH of water slightly. Sodium carbonate will actually have a dramatic effect on both pH and total alkalinity. Using sodium bicarbonate to raise pH is the equivalent of driving a nail into a wall using the handle of a screw driver — it can be done, but a hammer would handle the job more effectively and at much less of a cost.

    Sodium Hypochlorite or Chlorine Bleach

    Uses & Benefits

As you know, Wechlser Pool & Supply Company is the Catskills leading supplier of liquid chlorine. But did you know that household bleach and pool chlorine are the same thing? The difference lies in the concentration strength. Chlorine bleach is formed by mixing water with the chlorine-based compound sodium hypochlorite. Your typical household bleach is usually a 6% concentration, while pool chlorine is usually between 10 – 12%.

The biggest advantage of using liquid chlorine to sanitize your swimming pool is that there is nothing "extra" added to you pool except the water to liquify the sodium hypochlorite and a small amount of salt. Think of it as buying a bouquet of flowers and getting all roses instead of dandelions.

It’s the fillers that go into powdered chlorine that can cause a variety of issue with your pool water. Consider this – chlorine tablets commonly have tri-chlor that adds a conditioner to your pool. This may lower your pools pH but it also adds CYA or cyanuric acid. This stabilizer typically helps prevent the sun from buring off the chlorine. What actually happens over time is that the CYA level gets to a point that your chlorine is not effective. Correcting this can be costly and take a lot of time.

You can see that staying as close to a pure chlorine is the best option, but who wants to handle liquid chlorine. The best option is to a liquid chlorine feed system. These systems feed the liquid chlorine into the pool and adjust the amount based upon your pools chemisty. Ask one of our help service techs how we can install a liquid chlorine system on your pool.

    • Many of our customers interact with us remotely, limiting the exposure between our employees. Deliveries are made to tanks outside your home or business. We strongly encourage our customers to continue to interact remotely online or over the phone. Our customer service representatives will continue to be available over the phone. Currently our Wechsler storefront is closed. This can change as the situation dictates. Visit our website for updates.

Why You Should Hire Pool Closing Expert

Great article brought to you by the pool experts at Pool Operation Management, explains why it’s important to go to the pros when it’s time to close your entertainment investment.

With the end of summer just around the corner, it’s time it start thinking about closing your pool. Getting your pool ready for the winter is more complicated than simply tossing a pool cover over it. Properly closing a pool requires time, equipment, and technical expertise that many pool owners simply don’t have. By hiring a pool closing company, you get to enjoy every last bit of summer.

    PEACE OF MIND
One benefit of hiring a pool closing company to winterize your pool is peace of mind. In cold temperatures, pool pipes can freeze and potentially crack if they were not winterized correctly. Unfortunately, replacing these pipes can be quite expensive. A pool closing company knows exactly how to prepare your pool for winter so you can rest assured that there will not be any mishaps.

    PROPER EQUIPMENT
As previously mentioned, closing a pool isn’t a simple process and it requires the right equipment to get the job done. You need a blower, a cover tool, a pump to remove the water, and more. These tools can be expensive and the average pool owner wouldn’t know where to purchase them and how to use them. With a pool closing company, this isn’t an issue. Professionals will come to you with all of the tools necessary to properly close your pool.

    TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
To properly close a pool, you need to know what to do, how to do it, the equipment you will need, and how to use that equipment. If you don’t know every last step, you could face some serious and costly problems. An expert pool closing company can provide a certified staff of experienced professionals who are fully aware of the entire process. The technical expertise of a pool closing company is yet another reason why winterizing your pool should be left to the experts.

    SAFETY
If you attempt to close your pool yourself, you could be putting yourself at risk for injury. Equipment needed to close your pool, as well as the pool cover, are very heavy and lifting them alone could result in a pulled muscle or back pain. A professional pool closing company will send out a team of professionals when closing a pool. Also, installing a pool cover can be difficult at times and you could potentially fall into the pool. By hiring professionals to close your pool, you can avoid these risks.

    TIME
When you installed your pool, you were probably thinking about all of the fun and leisure you would get out of it. The time-consuming process of closing a pool for the colder months was likely the last thing on your mind. By hiring a professional pool closing company, you can savor the last moments of summer and spend that time on things you love. Would you rather sweat it out in the backyard on your day off or enjoy a summer day with family and friends?

Safety First – Learn how to keep safe in and around the pool

These recommendations are brought to you by the Pool & Spa Alliance (formerly The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals). In addition to supervision, APSP supports the concept of layers of protection. This means that your pool, spa, or hot tub is equipped with several devices to delay unsupervised access or to warn of a child’s presence. Layers of protection for consideration include:

    • Adult Supervision
No matter your age or skill level, increase pool safety and enjoyment by ensuring that there’s always at least one non-swimming adult present for supervision. A whistle comes in handy to alert and command everyone’s attention promptly. There is no greater layer of protection than constant adult supervision.
    • Fencing
Fencing is another possible layer of protection. There’s a fence for every taste and budget, from wooden and chain link to ornamental and thick hedge barriers. Present your plans and design ideas to your local building code office, homeowners’ group, or other regulatory organization before proceeding.
    • Automatic or Manual Safety Covers
A non-penetrating cover can completely cover the pool and block access to pool water.  All safety cover types should meet ASTM F13-46 standard.
    • Locking Hot Tub Cover
The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) recommends that all portable hot tub owners have a safety cover that locks.  Locking hot tub covers should meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) F1346-91 safety standard.
    • Alarms
Alarms set off a loud sound – and even lights – to warn of potential danger. Consider home security features such as door and exit alarms, fence gate alarms, and water level sensors.
    • Rope and Float Line
Placed across the pool, the rope and float line alerts swimmers to the separation between the deep and shallow ends of the pool.
    • Life Ring, Shepherd’s Crook (Hook)
These devices are used to pull someone from the pool to safety.  All rescue equipment should be placed near the pool in a clearly marked and readily accessible spot, and periodically checked to make sure it’s in good condition.
    • First Aid Kit
A first aid kit should be kept in a safe and convenient location and periodically checked to make sure the kit is well stocked with all essentials.
    • Emergency Information
Post CPR, emergency (911 or other) contact information, and warning signs in a clearly visible spot near the pool. You and your family may even perform routine safety drills to remind everyone what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency.
    • Outside Telephone
A cordless phone at poolside lets you call for help or information quickly, without leaving the pool area.
    • Sunscreen
Choose a level of pool protection that’s right for you and use it!   Even on cooler, cloudy days, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can burn and damage skin cells.
    • Toys, Games, and Floats
All recreational pool equipment should be safe and age appropriate for each individual. Never leave loose objects in or around the pool. Put them away for security and safety.
    • Maintenance Supplies
All cleaners, chemicals, and maintenance supplies should be kept in a locked storage area, away from children and pets. Check labels for proper storage and expiration dates, and follow manufacturers’ guidelines.

Looking for a simpler way to sanitize your swimming pool?

Look no further than Wechsler Pool for your bulk chlorine!

Switching to liquid chlorine to sanitize your commercial or residential swimming pool has never been easier! Not only can we deliver liquid chlorine to your location, but we can also install the equipment necessary to sanitize your pool and keep it sparkling clean all summer.

    • Liquid Chlorine is Cleaner: No granular powder to settle on the bottom of your pool and cloud your pool water.
    • Quicker: Liquid begins working instantly; granular chlorine must dissolve first to distribute throughout the pool.
    • Non-Scaling: Granular chlorine can lead to excessively high calcium or stabilizer levels, which can cause scaling or pool stains requiring additional chemicals.
    • Costs Less: Liquid chlorine is significantly less than granular chlorine, because the chlorine strength of 2.5 gallons of liquid chlorine would require 4-7 lbs. of granular chlorine shock.

Contact us for a free quote on switching to liquid chlorine. Wechsler Pool has been proudly serving the Catskill region for over 85 years. We look forward to serving all your swimming pools needs. Wechsler Pool Supply - everything but water!
